The Night Before Kickoff 🌙
There was a lot going on yesterday… but don’t worry, we dug through the highlights to bring you the best of the best. Ready to dive in?
Shohei Ohtani hit a homer against the Pirates that was flying 120 miles per hour.
🎥 Watch the hardest-hit ball of his entire career!
That was his 46th home run of the year. He added a single and a double to finish with three hits.
But the Pirates ended up winning 9–7.
Home-run leader Cal Raleigh? Yeah, he hit one last night too.
🎥 Check out his 51st of the season.
Like Ohtani’s Dodgers, Raleigh’s Mariners lost. Rays 6, Mariners 5.
Rafael Devers’ homer against the Rockies led to the most yelling. And it wasn’t from the fans.
🎥 Watch what happened after he stood in the batter’s box to admire his hit!
The umpires even had to kick three players out of the game for bad sportsmanship.
At least Devers’ Giants went on to win 7–4.
That’s three big blasts in one night! 💣
9–7, 6–5, 7–4.
Kind of sounds like a tennis score.
That got us thinking… what happened in the US Open yesterday?
The match of the day: #7 Novak Djokovic vs. #4 Taylor Fritz.
Fritz is ranked higher now, but Djokovic is the GOAT. He’s won more major tennis championships (aka Grand Slams) than any other man.
And he’s never lost to Fritz in their 10 matches.
🎥 Want to see how it went? Let’s pick it up with Djokovic leading two sets to none.
Make it 11 straight against Fritz for the GOAT.
Oh, and if that wasn’t enough for you…
The new college football AP Poll is out!
The biggest changes?
Ohio State moved up to #1 after beating Texas, which dropped to #7.
LSU moved up to #3 after beating Clemson, which dropped to #8.
Miami moved up to #5 after beating Notre Dame, which dropped to #9.
And Florida State jumped into the top 25 at #14 after beating Alabama, which tumbled to #21.
That’s a lot of teams moving up and down! It happens when good teams all play each other right at the start of the season.
The Week 2 schedule?
Still plenty of good games. But only one matchup of ranked teams: #15 Michigan at #18 Oklahoma.
And while we’re looking forward…
Now’s probably a good time to remind you that today is the last day before the 2025 NFL season starts.
Tomorrow night, we get to watch the Eagles, who won last year’s Super Bowl, play the Cowboys.
Buckle up, Smallballers!
Smallball is just for fun.
