Soccer Starts, Brewers Don’t Stop ⚽⚾
Waiting for football? Waiting for basketball? Good news: you don’t have to wait for soccer.
1️⃣ Game On in England ⚽👑
The NFL is still a few weeks away. The NBA doesn’t tip off until October.
But one professional sports season just started… say hello to the English Premier League, or EPL!
It’s the biggest and most important soccer league in England, and one of the most popular sports competitions in the entire world.
Along with Spain’s La Liga, Italy’s Serie A, Germany’s Bundesliga, and France’s Ligue 1, it’s part of the “big five” club leagues.
The EPL has 20 clubs, but six are teams almost everyone who follows soccer has heard of.
Those six? Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham, and Manchester City. Some are famous for history and tradition, others for recent dominance (looking at you, Man City).
2️⃣ Friday Night Lights 🏟️
Last night, the new EPL season kicked off with defending champion Liverpool hosting Bournemouth.
🎥 Hit play to see who won!
What a roller coaster!
Liverpool scored first, but Bournemouth, one of the league’s smaller clubs, kept fighting to stay in the game.
But with just a few minutes left, Federico Chiesa smashed in a goal to put Liverpool ahead for good. And that last goal was Liverpool’s biggest star, Mo Salah, finishing off the 4–2 win.
3️⃣ New Season, Big Goals 🥅
That was just the appetizer for a full opening weekend. The biggest early-season showdown is tomorrow: Manchester United vs. Arsenal.
Here’s how the season works:
Each of the 20 teams plays every other team twice.
Wins are worth 3 points, ties (draws) are 1 point, and losses are 0 points.
All 20 teams are ranked in one big list (in soccer, this is called the table).
The team with the most points in May is the champion!
Most weeks, each team plays just one match. So Saturdays (and some Sundays) are when most of the action happens.
Anything else you need to know? Let’s see…
The top five EPL teams qualify for the Champions League, a separate tournament to face the best clubs from the other top leagues in Europe.
There’s also a process called relegation. The three last-place teams get sent down to a lower league… while three teams from that league move up to replace them.
🧮 Quick Math Break!
We know a win is worth 3 points and each team plays 38 games in a season.
While the EPL gets rolling, we’re also keeping an eye on baseball (little and big), the WNBA, golf, NFL preseason, and more.
If it’s a story worth knowing, we’ll have it for you!
Speaking of which… how about a little baseball bonus before we finish?
The Brewers came into yesterday on a 12-game win streak. But they were losing 8–1 to the Reds.
Think they pulled off a wild comeback to grab their 13th straight win?
🎥 Buckle up and hit play!
Tomorrow’s Sunday… and you know what that means! See you then!
